The Markbook: gateway to every piece of student activity in a Subject

Track all student work and review progress from a single page.

Every Subject in Stile has its own Markbook, which shows you a grid view of every student and every Lesson within that Subject. It's the quickest way to see an overview of your students' activities, and you can quickly and easily drill down to get more details. This article acts as a quick guide and directory to more specific tutorials on each part of the Markbook page.

Access the Markbook by clicking the green Markbook button in the Subject header at the top of the page.

Here's what you can see and do in the Markbook:

Understand student activity at a glance

The Markbook is organized into a grid. The columns each represent Lessons in the Subject, and students are displayed in rows. At the intersection of a row and column, you'll find that specific student's work on that Lesson.

The Markbook uses a series of status icons representing all of the work done to give you a fast, easy-to-read overview of the whole Class. A legend is available in the upper left corner to explain the icons.

  • A green dot means the student has submitted the Lesson;
  • A half-filled blue dot means the student has opened the Lesson;
  • A grey padlock means you or another teacher collected the work and it is now locked;
  • A grey tick mark means you or another teacher has released feedback and answers;
  • A curly arrow means you requested resubmission, and the student should try again;
  • A red clock icon means there is a due date set for the Lesson, and the student's submission is overdue;
  • A white dot means you marked the student absent and they have not opened the Lesson;
  • Assessments are marked with an orange stripe at the top of the column. When you release answers and feedback, you'll see the student's overall mark appear as a percentile score or raw mark;
  • A blank cell with no icon means the student has not opened the Lesson and there is no work to view. You can click on these cells to mark the student Absent.

View details about individual student work

You can drill down from the Markbook overview to gain even more insight about your students.

Find the student and Lesson you want to focus on and click on the status icon to view more information.

Note: If the student has not opened the Lesson at all then the cell will be blank. Stile records when a student opens a Lesson and a status icon will appear in the Markbook in realtime to reflect this.

A pop-up will appear and includes the following:

  • The status of the Lesson (e.g. In progress, submitted, collected, resubmission requested, etc.);
  • The date and time of the most recent activity (and a late flag if it's overdue);
  • The title of the Lesson;
  • The date and time of the most recent submission, collection or work done;
  • Summary feedback, if you've left any;
  • A link you can click to go to the student's worksheet;
  • Relevant controls to collect the work, release answers, or request resubmission.

Click the X at the top right corner of the pop-up to close it so you can continue browsing the Markbook.

Open and close Folders to organize your view

Folders in the Markbook can be opened and closed. Closing Folders that you're not currently working in will help reduce the loading time of the marks. It also means you won't have to scroll horizontally as much to see the Lessons you are interested in.

A closed Folder will display the Folder's title shaded in blue and its Lessons will be hidden. Click the (+) icon below the Folder's title to open the Folder.

An open Folder will display the Folder's title shaded in blue and its Lessons will be visible. Click the (-) icon below the Folder's title to close it.

Protip: Folders and Lessons in the Markbook are displayed in the same order as they appear on the Subject's Lessons page. When you rearrange Folders on the Lessons page, they will also be rearranged in the Markbook.

Click the (...) button to the right of the Analytics button on a chosen Lesson to reveal 3 options:

  • Collect all unfinished work collects and locks the Lesson for all students in the Class, unless they are marked Absent.
  • Release all answers shows the students their marks, model answers, and any feedback you've written on the Lesson. This will only affect work that has been submitted or collected. Students who are still working or have not started will not see the answers.
  • Request resubmission from all only affects work that has been submitted, collected, or had answers released. Students who are still working and those who have not started will not have resubmission requested.

Mark a student Absent

The absent icon is a status icon that can be used when a student has not yet opened the Lesson. The icon will be replaced with an In progress icon when the student opens the Lesson for the first time.

2021Markbook-HoverAbsent.png

When you hover over an empty cell in the Markbook, the option to mark the student absent for that Lesson will appear. This only happens in columns where at least one other student has started working on the Lesson. Click the cell to add an Absent icon.

Clicking the Absent icon will open a pop-up that includes a timestamp of when the student was marked absent, an option to mark the student as present (remove the Absent icon), and an option to Collect the work. Collecting the work will create a blank copy of the Lesson for you to mark, and it will lock the Lesson so the student cannot work on it.
