This guide helps you close out last year's Stile Subjects and set up for the year ahead. If you are new to Stile or need a refresher after the break, see Getting Started with Stile and the self-paced training modules in the Professional Learning Hub.
Step 1: Clean up last year's Subjects
Hide check-ins and tests
Students can still access old work and see released answers unless you hide them. Review what is still visible and hide anything you do not want students to access anymore. You may want to leave some Sessions open, such as unit glossaries or major projects.
Archive your Subjects
Archive last year's Subjects regardless of whether you plan to reuse the content or start fresh. Archiving removes the Subject from students' home pages while preserving their work in a read-only state.
If your school uses Clever or ClassLink for rostering, then your Stile Subjects will match the Clever/ClassLink data. Sections removed in Clever/ClassLink will be archived in Stile automatically. Contact your school's or district's IT team to learn more about the timing of the sync. If you created any of your own Subjects, then they will not sync and must be archived manually.
Note: Subjects with co-teachers can only be archived by your school's Stile Admin. If you need to leave a shared Subject, archive your Class or Classes within it, duplicate the Subject if you want to keep the Sessions, then remove yourself as a co-teacher. See Add another teacher to your Subject or remove a co-teacher.
Stile content is regularly updated, with the latest versions always available in the Stile Library. If you heavily customised content from the Stile Library last year, duplicate your Subject to get a clean copy without any student work to use this year. If not, create fresh Subjects and pull the latest versions from the Stile Library or your District Library. See Duplicate a Subject.
Step 2: Create new Subjects and Classes
Create new Subjects from your side menu if you did not duplicate from last year and if you do not roster through Clever/ClassLink. If you teach the same content to multiple groups (e.g. 7D and 7G), create one Subject for the whole cohort and organise students into separate Classes via the Students page. See Create a new Subject and Create, archive, and manage Classes.
Skip this step if you roster through Clever or ClassLink. New Subjects and Classes will be created for you when rosters are finalised. If you want to get a head start on planning for the new school year, create a new Subject and title it something like "Sandbox" or "Planning" to remind you that it's not the subject you'll use with students. You can organise your resources from the District or School library here, and then copy them into your rostered Subjects once your student data syncs.
Step 3: Add units to your Subjects
Add units from the Stile Science Library or your school/district library and organise them to suit your teaching plan. If you have any custom resources, copy them over from your Planning subject. Stile publishes small updates to units all the time, so it's best to only add the units that you plan to use first, and grab the rest as you go. See Copy and Paste Sessions across Subjects.
Before students enrol, review which Sessions will be visible to them Most Sessions from the Stile Library are released by default, except for check-ins and tests. Use the Hide All button on a unit folder to hide everything at once, then release only what you want students to see first, such as an intro Session or pre-test.
If you need a quick refresher on how to use Stile effectively, check out the Professional Learning Hub for quick tips and videos.
Step 4: Enrol your students on day one
Give students time on the first day to log in, reset forgotten passwords, or create new accounts. See Add students to enrol students manually, or refer to your Clever/ClassLink data sync for enrolment.
If your school uses Clever/ClassLink, students will not populate in the Class until they have logged in for the first time. Prompt your students to log in to Stile via Clever to complete their enrolment. See Clever Integration FAQ for US Schools.
To reduce login friction across the year, consider setting up Single Sign-on (SSO), which lets teachers and students log in using their existing school credentials. See Single Sign-on school integration.
You can also create temporary passwords for students who cannot access their accounts. See Reset a student password.
