Getting Started Pt 4: Analyse

Review your students' work on an individual or whole-class basis and provide quick, targeted feedback to help them succeed.

By now, you have set up your Subject and successfully run your first Lesson in Stile! (If that doesn't sound right, check out Getting Started Pt 2 and Pt 3.) Analyse mode and the Markbook will help you to effectively review your students' work in the Lesson and identify any strengths and weaknesses in understanding.

By the end of this article, you will be able to:

  • spot common misconceptions among your class;
  • quickly mark your students' work and leave feedback on their responses;
  • navigate the Markbook to track student learning throughout the term or year.

We recommend you follow along using a Lesson that you've already used with your students so that it contains some work for you to review. If you haven't taught a Lesson yet and you're powering through these tutorials, then you can compare your empty Lesson or the sample Lesson with the relevant screenshots included here.

Switch to Analyse mode

To recap, Prepare mode helps you review and edit a Lesson before releasing it to your students and Teach mode is what you use to direct the flow of the Lesson. Analyse mode focuses on the student responses and allows you to get a pulse on their comprehension as a group.

Click into the lesson you recently taught (or the sample Lesson) and near the top right corner of the screen, switch the green toggle to Analyse. This view will look very different from Prepare and Teach mode because it is designed to give you a quick, compact view of the data without the need to scroll through the whole length of the lesson.

See who is working and who has completed the Lesson

The first thing you will see on the page is a big, bold breakdown of overall student activity.

Click on one of the numbers to reveal a list of students. You can use this to quickly see who hasn't opened the lesson yet and who has already submitted their work. Clicking a student's name in the Working or Submitted categories will take you directly to that student's worksheet. For now, we'll stay on the Analyse page and get a better idea of how your class did as a whole.

Explore the Lesson data to understand student comprehension

The Question analysis section lists every question in the Lesson and it allows you to drill into the responses for each one, in different ways. This means you can jump straight to a question that you specifically want to review, with far less scrolling than in Prepare or Teach modes. We'll get more into the different types of questions below.

The last section of the Analyse mode page is the Results distribution graph. This only comes into play when you are reviewing an assessment, which is a Lesson with mark values assigned to the questions. Unit quizzes and tests are assessments, for example. Provide feedback on key questions to address learning goals

Key questions are directly related to the Lesson's learning goals, so mark these first if your time is limited. Key questions and Challenge questions are boldly labelled so you can jump straight to them. These will be the best indicator that your students are on track, and they are the most powerful place to leave feedback.

Assess responses and model answers on open-ended questions

Open-ended questions, like Written response or Table questions, will have a View responses button. This will open up the same view as the Show responses button in Teach mode.

Click on a question's View responses button to open its quick review screen. The marking and feedback tools can be found at the bottom of this screen: a green tick, a red cross, and a comments box. Mark the response right or wrong by clicking on the tick or the cross. Click the blue speech bubble to write a comment for your student to see. This feedback will be visible to the student directly under their response on their worksheet. 

Protip: Keyboard shortcuts make this go even faster! Use your left and right arrow keys to move between students. Type R or W to mark the response Right or Wrong. Type C to open the comment box and hit Escape to close the comment box once you finish typing your feedback.

The joys of automatically marked questions

There's never enough time in the day and marking student work can very quickly dominate what few spare minutes a teacher has. That's why we made some questions automatically marked. Multiple-choice questions, which make up the majority of questions in Stile quizzes and tests, are set up to automatically mark your students' responses while the work is being completed. This is great news for marking unit exams, because most of the work is already done for you!

Note: You can see the marks on the Multiple-choice questions immediately, but your students won't see the answers until after they have submitted their work.

Auto-marked questions include a simple red and green graph in the Question analysis section to show you the ratio of correct and incorrect responses among your students. This gives you a fast way to scan through the questions and make sure everyone is on track. If a question stands out with more red than green in the graph, then you'll know to take a closer look as this can indicate a common misconception or particularly challenging question.

Click on the question you want to review. The Question analysis will expand to reveal the full question and a bar graph of student responses for each answer option. Click on one of the bars to see who gave that response. Multiple-choice questions in Stile lessons also come equipped with pre-written feedback for each answer option. This is to help guide the student toward the correct answer once they submit their work, and it means less writing for you!

Navigate the Markbook and its class controls

You've now successfully prepared, taught, and analysed a lesson in Stile. Woohoo! All that's left is to release the worksheets back to your students so they can see the answers, marks, and teacher feedback. You can do this in just a few clicks from the Markbook.

Scroll back to the top of the page and click the Markbook button in the Subject's green header. This will take you a grid view of every student and every Lesson in your Subject. When you want to get an overview of all activity in your Subject, then the Markbook is the place to be.

Locate the title of the Lesson among the top row of the grid. You might need to scroll the page to the right to do this, or close some of the open Folders. If you see the title of the Folder but not the Lesson, then that means the Folder is closed. Click the Folder's title to open it.

Below the Lesson's title will be icons that represent each student's individual worksheet tied to that Lesson. These icons update in real-time. A Progress icon will appear seconds after a student opens the Lesson for the first time and it will change to a Submitted icon once the student submits their work. When you are ready to hand the work back to your students, click on the menu button just below the Lesson's title. Each Lesson has its own menu, so be sure to click the right one! This will reveal three options: Collect all work; Release all answers; and Request resubmission from all. These options apply to the whole class with one click so there's no need to do each student's worksheet individually.

If any of your students have not submitted their work yet, then you will want to collect it first. This is effectively a "pencils down" action that will lock the worksheets and prevent any further work. You could also do this step before you start marking their work. Each student's progress icon will turn into a grey padlock to show you that it's been collected and locked.

Open the menu again and this time select Release all answers. The grey padlocks will become grey tick marks (or green percentile grades if your Lesson is an Assessment). This means that your students can now see the answers and model answers, your feedback, and their marks on each question. They won't be able to make any further changes.
